How to Install the Junior Word Add-in Manually
Can’t install Junior from Microsoft AppSource? Add it to Microsoft Word manually with the Junior manifest file. It takes about five minutes on macOS or Windows.
Before you start
- You need the desktop version of Microsoft Word from Microsoft 365 or Office 2019 or later.
- Download the manifest file using the button above. You can also download it from https://plugin.junior.law/manifest.xml.
- After installation, Junior appears in Word as the JR3 button on the Home tab and as a separate Junior tab.
- If your company’s IT department manages Microsoft 365, ask them to deploy Junior for you instead (see For IT administrators below). Junior then installs automatically for every user.
Install on macOS
- Quit Word completely (Word menu → Quit Word, or Cmd+Q).
- In Finder, choose Go → Go to Folder… (Shift+Cmd+G) and paste this path:
~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.Word/Data/Documents/wef
If Finder says the folder does not exist, open~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.Word/Data/Documentsinstead and create a new folder namedwefinside it. - Copy the downloaded
manifest.xmlfile into theweffolder. - Start Word and open any document. The JR3 button appears on the Home tab.
- If you don’t see it, go to Insert → Add-ins → My Add-ins (click the small arrow next to it) and choose Junior under Developer Add-ins.
If you prefer the Terminal, these two commands create the folder and download the file into it:
mkdir -p ~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.Word/Data/Documents/wef
curl -o ~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.Word/Data/Documents/wef/junior.xml https://plugin.junior.law/manifest.xml
To uninstall: quit Word and delete the XML file from the wef folder.
Install on Windows
On Windows, Word loads add-in manifests from a shared folder that you mark as a trusted add-in catalog.
- Create a folder, for example
C:\JuniorAddin, and save the downloadedmanifest.xmlfile into it. - Share the folder: right-click it → Properties → Sharing → Share…, add yourself, then click Share. Note the network path that Windows shows, for example
\\YOUR-PC-NAME\JuniorAddin. - In Word, open File → Options → Trust Center → Trust Center Settings… → Trusted Add-in Catalogs.
- In Catalog Url, enter the network path from step 2. It must start with
\\; a path likeC:\…does not work. Click Add catalog, tick Show in Menu, then click OK. - Close Word completely and start it again.
- Go to Insert → Add-ins → My Add-ins (in newer versions: Home → Add-ins → More Add-ins), open the Shared Folder tab, select Junior and click Add.
Several people in the same office can use one shared folder. Each person only needs to do steps 3–6.
To uninstall: remove the catalog in Trusted Add-in Catalogs and delete the XML file from the shared folder.
Troubleshooting
If Junior does not appear, or an old version keeps loading, quit Word and clear the Office add-in cache. Then start Word again.
macOS: delete the contents of these folders:
~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.Word/Data/Library/Caches/
~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.Word/Data/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office/16.0/Wef/
Windows: delete the contents of this folder:
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Wef\
For IT administrators
If your organization blocks Microsoft AppSource, you can deploy Junior centrally. Junior then appears automatically in Word for the users you choose, on Windows, macOS and Word on the web.
- Sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center.
- Go to Settings → Integrated apps → Upload custom apps.
- Choose Office Add-in and upload the manifest file, or enter the URL
https://plugin.junior.law/manifest.xml. - Assign the add-in to users or groups and finish the deployment.
